In late October, the 1st High School of the island of Kos (IPPOKRATEIO) actively participated in an ERASMUS mobility program held in Spain, meticulously organized by
Spanish educators from Colegio Concertado Bilingüe Leonardo Da Vinci in Los Belones, Murcia. The initiative involved the enthusiastic involvement of an Italian team comprising both teachers and students from Calabria.
The primary objective of the journey was to promote collaboration among schools from culturally diverse countries—Greece, Spain, and Italy. The focal point was addressing crucial issues like bullying and racism while emphasizing the fundamental value of respect within our educational systems.
Bullying took center stage in the discussions, covering aspects such as its various types, preventive measures, and resolution strategies within the school environment. The program seamlessly integrated activities into the school schedule, aligning them with different subjects.
The experience commenced with a warm welcome from the headmistress during the initial morning assembly, delivered in both English and Spanish. Subsequently, meaningful interactions with all participants were reinforced through short videos and presentations showcasing the diverse schools. Notably, the outcomes of a bullying survey conducted in our school received special attention.
In the following days, students actively engaged in activities embedded in the school program. In music class, they familiarized themselves with Spanish folk music and instruments, while in art, they crafted a symbolic word snail on the schoolyard with terms like respect, safety, love, friendship, and empathy, creating a safe haven for bullying victims.
An excursion to Calblanque beach became a highlight, featuring a scenic hour-and-a-half walk through Los Belones. The day included multicultural group games, fostering relaxation, improved acquaintanceship, and bonding among students.
The concluding day involved a reflective meeting for comprehensive discussions and feedback. The Spanish counterparts organized a captivating “escape room” activity, guiding students to find their way out of offensive behavior. This approach aimed to heighten awareness, maturity, and preparedness to address injustice and violence in the school setting. The program concluded with a celebratory school party comprising food, drinks, dance, and abundant enjoyment.
The overall experience proved immensely rewarding, offering insights not only into diverse cultures and lifestyles but also contributing to the development of effective anti-bullying strategies. Throughout the trip, their engagement in constructive discussions, workshops, and the exchange of best practices underscored our commitment to creating a more inclusive and respectful school environment. Rather than focusing solely on theoretical analysis or reviewing bullying incidents, their approach primarily involved understanding and constructing strategies to combat and reduce school bullying.
The resolute commitment to combat bullying and racism through education remains steadfast. The school firmly believe that education serves as a potent tool to nurture respect, tolerance, and empathy among students. Through this collaborative endeavor, they have taken substantial steps toward fostering a culture of inclusivity, where all students can flourish and learn without the fear of discrimination.
While this journey has just commenced, the school is eagerly anticipating the possibilities ahead. By working together across borders, aim to make a lasting impact in the ongoing fight against bullying and racism. Their aspiration is to ensure that the next generation grows up in a world that values diversity and upholds respect as a cornerstone of their education.
They eagerly anticipate the continuation of this collaborative effort and extend an invitation to all educational institutions to join us in our mission to create a more inclusive and respectful society.
Together, we can truly make a difference!!
