Attendance in them is compulsory for all 5 year old children. The operation of Nipiagogeia falls under the authority of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. In what regards early childhood care, Child and Infant Centres operate under the auspices of the Municipal Authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Primary Education<\/strong><br>The next stage comprises the compulsory attendance of Dimotiko Scholeio (Primary School) which belongs to primary education and lasts for 6 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Secondary education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondary education includes two cycles of study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gymnasio<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first one is compulsory and corresponds to gymnasio (lower secondary\nschool).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It lasts 3\n     years<\/li><li>It provides\n     general education<\/li><li>It covers\n     ages 12-15<\/li><li>It is a\n     prerequisite for enrolling at general or vocational upper secondary\n     schools<\/li><li>Parallel to\n     day gymnasio, evening (esperino) gymnasio operates.&nbsp; Attendance\n     starts at the age of 14.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lykeio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The second one is the optional geniko or epangelmatiko lykeio (general\nor vocational upper secondary school).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It lasts 3\n     years<\/li><li>Pupils\n     enrol at the age of 15<\/li><li>There are\n     two different types:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Geniko (general) lykeio.<\/strong> It lasts 3 years and includes both common core\n     subjects and optional subjects of specialisation<\/li><li><strong>Epangelmatiko (vocational) lykeio<\/strong>. It offers two cycles of studies:<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The secondary cycle<\/li><li>The optional post-secondary cycle, the so-called \u201capprenticeship class\u201d.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Parallel to day lykeia, there are also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Esperina\n     genika (evening general) lykeia<\/li><li>Esperina\n     epangelmatika (evening vocational) lykeia.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Post-secondary\neducation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Institouta      epangelmatikis katartisis \u2013 IEK (vocational training institutes) are the main providers of post-secondary      non-tertiary education. They operate in the non-formal education      framework.
